Reporter

Role Overview Be the voice of a community. Report with purpose. Grow with Hearst Newspapers. Join a newsroom where your reporting truly matters. At the Midland Daily News, we don’t just chase headlines — we shine a light on what matters most to our community. We’re looking for an energetic, curious, and driven storyteller who’s ready to dig deep, break stories, and capture the pulse of local government, politics, and community life in Midland, Bay City, and the surrounding Great Lakes Bay Region. This is more than a job. It’s your chance to be part of a fast-paced, collaborative newsroom that values storytelling, integrity, and innovation — and yes, we like to have fun while doing it. What You’ll Do You’ll own the community beat — keeping readers informed, engaged, and inspired. Whether it’s covering breaking news, or crafting long-form features, you’ll produce impactful journalism that resonates across digital and print platforms. • Deliver accurate, compelling stories with speed and clarity. • Preview and cover community events. • Source stories that matter by building strong, local connections. • Collaborate with editors and digital producers to optimize storytelling for digital audiences with a focus on video storytelling and social media engagement. • Juggle breaking news with feature writing — and know when to pivot as news breaks. What You’ll Bring • A degree in journalism, communications, or a related field. • Proven news reporting experience — internships and campus media count! • Natural curiosity and a passion for covering public affairs. • Excellent writing, interviewing, and organizational skills. • Experience and proficiency in video storytelling. • A self-starter who thrives under deadline pressure. • Bonus points for experience with FOIA/public records requests. What We Offer We believe journalism is a team sport. That’s why you’ll work in a collaborative, mentorship-driven newsroom with real opportunities for growth — all while helping shape the future of local news. • A dynamic, mission-driven environment — no two days are the same. • Ongoing skills training on the latest digital and storytelling tools. • Competitive compensation with room to advance your career. • A team that listens — your ideas and voice matter here.
