Antares The Senior-Staff Embedded Software Engineer at Antares owns the full lifecycle of real-time embedded software for microreactor hardware. They collaborate across teams to define requirements, design software architecture, and integrate hardware-facing components.

Responsibilities

Antares is seeking a Senior or Staff Embedded Software Engineer to build the real-time software that operates and tests our first-of-a-kind microreactor hardware. This software sits between custom electronics and reactor control infrastructure, translating sensor data, commands, timing requirements, diagnostics, and fault responses into reliable embedded behavior. Your primary focus will be end-to-end ownership of embedded software systems across the full software lifecycle. You will drive projects from conceptual design and requirements definition through technical design, verification and validation planning, implementation, validation and integration, operational readiness, deployment, and ongoing operations and maintenance.
Own the full lifecycle of real-time embedded software projects for reactor and test
hardware, defining the technical approach, execution plan, risks, and verification
Collaborate with electrical, controls, reactor software, systems, safety, and test
teams to define and document software requirements, resolve interfaces and risks,
and translate system needs into software architecture and testable, observable
Define software boundaries and partition functionality among hardware-facing
components, communication services, interrupts, real-time tasks, state machines,
control functions, and application logic.
Integrate embedded software with custom electronics, hardware interfaces, and
control algorithms.
Analyze failure modes and implement predictable fault handling and recovery

Required

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical
Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
Experience working with microcontrollers, bare-metal systems, an RTOS, or
similarly constrained real-time platforms.
Experience designing embedded software components, interfaces, state machines,
and task structures, with a strong understanding of interrupts, scheduling,
concurrency, data ownership, timing constraints, and resource limitations.
Working knowledge of common embedded communication interfaces such as SPI,
I2C, UART, CAN, Ethernet, or RS-485, sufficient to define hardware-facing interfaces
and support system integration.
Strong debugging skills across component and system boundaries using logs,
traces, source-level debuggers, or other appropriate tools.

Preferred

Experience in regulated, mission-critical, or safety-critical industries such as
nuclear, aerospace, defense, automotive, industrial controls, or medical devices.
Experience designing redundant or fault-tolerant systems, including degraded
operating modes, safe states, fault containment, and recovery.
Hands-on experience with board bring-up, device-driver development,
oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, or similar laboratory equipment.
Experience with bootloaders, remote firmware updates, rollback, or recovery
Experience developing or integrating automated software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-
