Responsibilities
Hedge is hiring a founding engineer to turn the day-to-day work of commercial insurance into reliable software that scales.
You’ll work directly with the founders and inside the operation: understand how an account gets placed, find the bottlenecks, and build the systems that remove them. We need someone deeply technical who also understands users, operations, and how the business makes money.
We’ve built the initial platform and established more than 100 insurance market partnerships. Your job is to productionize and scale that foundation, while building new systems that let a small team serve far more brokers.
Why we started Hedge
We’re Luke Button and Luke Rosa. We worked together launching new markets at Traba, backed by Founders Fund and Khosla Ventures. Each launch meant buying insurance for a high-risk business. Getting coverage was slow, manual, and painful enough that it became a problem we wanted to solve ourselves.
Button went on to build Fernstone, an AI-native retail insurance brokerage. Serving customers exposed a bigger bottleneck at the wholesale layer: access to carriers, underwriting, and the insurance product itself determined what we could deliver.
We started Hedge to address that bottleneck. We’re building from wholesale distribution toward an insurance company that brings distribution and underwriting together, giving us more control over the product and customer experience.
We’ve done the work of building the market relationships. Now we’re building the systems to serve independent retail brokers who struggle to get difficult accounts placed.
What you will own
Turn operational work into software. Work alongside brokers and the founders, follow real submissions, and build systems around the details that determine whether an account gets quoted and placed.
Productionize and scale the platform. Own architecture, data models, background jobs, integrations, monitoring, and failure recovery. Take responsibility for what happens after a feature ships.
Build AI that carries out insurance work. Develop agents that interpret submissions, gather missing information, prepare documents, coordinate carrier workflows, and maintain an accurate record of what happened.

Required
Hedge is building the operating system for commercial insurance distribution. You will work directly with the founders, own a consequential part of the company, and help define how the function works as we scale. We offer health benefits and meaningful equity.
This role is based in San Francisco and works in person with the team six days a week.
